The Taking Off curriculum introduces a character named Tillie Tellstar, a reporter from Planet Strongheart, who interviews four Earthling 4th grade students about their ideas on being healthy. Through active involvement in classroom activities, students learn that healthful eating and physical activity are the keys to a healthier lifestyle.
They learn to select and prepare nutritious foods as well as how to identify MVPA.
The curriculum is divided into 13 nutrition and physical activity lessons, each approximately 40 minutes long. It is designed to be implemented in sequence. The curriculum uses a variety of teaching strategies, including individual practice, cooperative learning groups, large-group discussions, role plays, educational games, goal setting, reports, projects, and hands-on snack preparation and taste-testing.
